26 April 1927 ~ 20 November 2019 Loving Husband, Father and Grandfather Billy Gene Ogan, age 92, of Honolulu, passed away on 20 November 2019. He was born in Topeka, Kansas, to Ira S. and Helen M. (Fraser) Ogan. The youngest of six children, he grew up in a farming community near Ozawkie, Kansas. He was two years old when his father died; his mother later remarried to Samuel E. (Ted) Bates. His mother died in 1941, while Billy was in high school. His humble farm background taught him the value of hard work and gave him an appreciation of things others sometimes take for granted, like running water, indoor plumbing and electricity. He was a good student, excelling in both academics and athletics, playing on the varsity basketball, baseball and track teams at Ozawkie Rural High School, from which he graduated in 1945. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in July 1945 and was in basic training when World War II ended. Following his discharge, he attended Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, where he was the Cadet Commander for the Air Force ROTC program. He graduated with a BA in history and was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the US Air Force in 1950. While at Washburn, he became engaged to his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Mary Egner. They were married at First Lutheran Church in Topeka on 26 June 1948. During his Air Force career, Billy was an administrative officer serving around the world, including assignments to Pusan Air Base, Korea (during the Korean War), Karamursel Air Base, Turkey and several states on the US mainland. His final assignment, in 1966, was to HQ PACAF at Hickam AFB, Hawaii, from which he retired in the rank of major in 1970. Billy began his second career at Maryknoll High School in Honolulu, where he taught history and social studies, and was commander of the Civil Air Patrol cadet squadron. He retired from teaching in 1991. He was a member of many organizations, including the Sagamore fraternity, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, the Military Officers Association of America and the Cocker Spaniel Club of Hawaii. Other interests included coin and stamp collecting and genealogy. He was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and sang bass in the choir. He was also a strong supporter of the Hawaii Opera Theater and the Bishop Museum. The family would like to thank the caregivers, medical and nursing personnel that took care of him at home, Tripler Hospital and Palolo Chinese Home during the last months of his life. Billy was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, on 26 April 2012. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah S. Ogan, Virginia Beach, VA; son, Michael C. Ogan, Honolulu; grandson, Adam G. Ogan & wife, Mayumi T., Tokyo, Japan; brother-in-law, John M. Egner & wife, Kathryn H., Overland Park, KS; sister-in-law, Irene T. Plymate, Wichita, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 10 December 2019, at Borthwick Mortuary Mauka Chapel, visitation at 4:00 p.m., service at 5:00 p.m. Burial will be on Thursday, 12 December 2019 at the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in the name of Billy G.
