A fourth generation kama'aina, Sam was born in Honolulu on August 29, 1929 to Katharine Anne von Holt and Henry Bancroft Caldwell. He spent his childhood in the pineapple fields of Wahiawa and Lanai City, then attended Punahou School during WWII. He graduated from The Gunnery (CT) and attended college before entering the Army, stationed at Schofield Barracks and Fort Shafter. After his stint at Fort Shafter, he married Catherine Fankhauser in 1954 and finished college, receiving his degree in Industrial Relations from San Jose State University (CA). Sam started his career at C. Brewer & Company in their Industrial Relations department in 1955. He then replaced Hannibal Tavares as the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association's Public Affairs Director in 1972, representing sugar interests at the State Legislature. Following his tenure with HSPA, Sam joined Francis Morgan at Hamakua Sugar in 1990, sharing an office in downtown Honolulu until Mr. Morgan's death in 1999. Sam continued working downtown managing Knudsen von Holt Partners until 2011. Even after retirement, Sam enjoyed weekly breakfasts and visits downtown. Sam and Cathy enjoyed many recreational activities including word and card games, roller skating, ice skating, and tennis. In the 1960s, when their daughters started played competitive tennis in Hawaii's junior ranks, Sam stepped in to help the tennis community in many capacities. For over 40 years, he volunteered: tournament director\/ referee, Hawaii State Tennis Association President (two terms), United States Tennis Association Hawaii Pacific Sectional Delegate (two terms), and Punahou Tennis Club President; he also helped create the Hawaii Tennis Umpires' Association in the late 1970s, and developed the Hawaii Tennis Foundation in the 1990s. Generations of Hawaii tennis players fondly remember their \"Uncle Sam.\" In November 2013, the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section inducted Sam into its Tennis Hall of Fame. Sanguine Sam earned recognition as a Super Donor at the Hawaii Blood Bank, donating an estimated 150 pints, until health issues precluded his continuing. He also served as Vice President for Personnel of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra in the late 1960s. Despite being shy by nature, Sam always had a joke to tell; he had a knack for putting people at ease. He entertained family and friends with stories and music, playing the guitar and ukulele at home and at parties.
