PHOTO COURTESY CONNOR TUMBAGA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Spending one-on-one time with his 12th-grade mentor led the two to talk about topics outside of algebra. For example, their shared love for sneakers \u2014 and not just any sneakers, but rare ones that cost quite the pretty penny.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhenever we would be in a math tutoring session, he would show me a new pair of shoes that were dropping,\u201d recalls Tumbaga. \u201cI was like, \u2018Why would anyone wait in line for shoes?\u2019 I had all the questions that all the adults have now asked me since I was 16 years old \u2014 and they still ask me today \u2014 &#x2018;Why do people want these shoes?\u2019 Well, it\u2019s because they\u2019re limited-edition shoes.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"We speak to one of Hawaii\u2019s new-generation of entrepreneur Connor Tumbaga\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xAo_TDiJT0E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018Do you want to wait in line for a pair of shoes, then you can flip it and make money?\u2019 As a 16 year old, making $200 on a pair of shoes \u2014 or just making $200 in general \u2014 is a big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eager for his new venture, the M\u0101noa native woke up before the sun to secure his place in line at Ala Moana Center Foot Locker. He then posted the sneakers on social media for more than he paid, and quickly saw how much of a market there really was for it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s easy money and doesn\u2019t take away from your day, so I started doing this every weekend because there would be a new shoe drop every weekend, and I was like, \u2018Wow, I can really capitalize on this,\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cI hired other people to wait in line, then it grew to me hiring people in New York, LA, London, Paris and Tokyo because there were limited shoes that were dropping only in those cities. PHOTO COURTESY CONNOR TUMBAGA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As Tumbaga\u2019s sneaker sales saw dramatic growth, so did his social media following. Before he knew it, he was one of the top resellers in the game, with his client list including big stars like Ariana Grande, Drake, Justin Bieber, Post Malone and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came up with this unique business strategy to have them buy the shoe then I would gift them an additional pair of shoes in exchange for a shoutout on their social media, which then grew my following following even more,\u201d Tumbaga says, adding that Tik-Tok influencer Bryce Hall was his first celebrity sale. \u201cI did that and continued to do that and then got picked up by some serious celebrities \u2014 like real celebrities with a real cult following \u2014 and it kind of took off. The celebrities told their friends and so on and so forth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When it came time for Tumbaga to graduate from high school in 2020, he already had a booming biz under his belt. Unlike his classmates, who were thinking about what college they wanted to go to, he was planning his next business venture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always told myself that I was never going to work for anyone,\u201d he says. \u201c A lot of the older people in my life say, \u2018I can\u2019t wait till reality hits you and you have to go get a job. There\u2019s no more flying first class and doing all this stuff\u2019 \u2014 and that enraged me. I was like, \u2018Why are these people telling me that I can\u2019t have this? That I have to go to college and get a \u2018real\u2019 job \u2026 So, I literally made it my mission to fly first class and that I would never get a \u2018real\u2019 job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inspiration for his next entrepreneurial enterprise could come from virtually anywhere. But where Tumbaga really shines is when he turns his passions into projects. Such is the case for his latest undertaking: concert promotion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a kind of a no-brainer,\u201d he says. \u201cI have all these connections in entertainment because I would go to these concerts and I would go to Rolling Loud and Coachella and do shoe transitions there. I met a lot of managers, talent, promoters and agencies, and to put on a show like that really excited me. I was at a Justin Bieber show in Atlanta and I leaned over to Justin\u2019s manager, Scooter, and I said to him, \u2018I want to do a show like this. I want to put this on.\u2019 We\u2019re in a room with 50,000 people all singing his songs. This is magical. If I can\u2019t be the talent singing up there, I want to put this show on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom that moment, I went home and I was talking to my girlfriend at the time and was saying, \u2018This is what I want to do,\u2019 and I never felt myself so passionate about something \u2014 ever. There was a huge, huge need in Hawai\u2018i for music that our generation listens to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His first show was scheduled to take place on Nov. 18 and feature rapper Tory Lanez. The artist\u2019s recent album, <em>Sorry 4 What<\/em>, rose to No. 1 on Apple Music\u2019s Hip-hop\/Rap chart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was looking at the pool of artists to bring as my first artist, I wanted to make a big boom in Hawai\u2018i \u2014 a guy that everybody, or most people in my generation, knew, and somebody who was on the come up to releasing another album,\u201d says Tumbaga. \u201cTory was about to release an album, he\u2019s not signed to any record label, he\u2019s independent, he doesn\u2019t have much restriction and he can do whatever he wants with his music. He\u2019s a super creative guy. I\u2019ve been in the studio with him many, many times, and (I knew) what he\u2019s cooking up was going to be No. 1.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tumbaga\u2019s skills as a showrunner were put to the test when it was announced that Lanez was sentenced to house arrest for an ongoing criminal investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne lesson that I\u2019ve learned through all of this is life is all about change,\u201d he continues. \u201cChange is the one constant in life and adapting to change can be a great challenge. Learning how to adapt and successfully navigate through change is key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To provide attendees with an experience unlike any other, Tumbaga has invested in a facility called The Warehouse, located at 2020 Auiki St. in Kalihi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re building out a space called The Warehouse, which is literally what it is \u2014 it was a warehouse and (we) basically turned it into a large, 3,500 capacity concert venue with state-of-the-art technology, lighting and video screen monitors, and stage production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coming up, Kodak Black is set to perform on Dec. 10, and although Tumbaga\u2019s lips are sealed about future performers, he promises that music fans have a lot to look forward to in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>He lists Dominic Fike, The Kid LAROI, Justin Bieber, Harry Styles, Frank Ocean, Lil Baby and Giveon as his dream artists to bring out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you hear that Connor Tumbaga is going to do a show in Hawai\u2018i, you know it\u2019s going to be high-end, you know it\u2019s going to be sophisticated and you know that it\u2019s going to be somebody that you want to listen to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tumbaga has accomplished a lot in the years since his math-tutee days \u2014 and all before he\u2019s turned 21, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the only drawback to being young is that sometimes I can\u2019t get into certain events and meetings because they\u2019re serving alcohol and I\u2019m under 21. I don\u2019t drink, I don\u2019t do drugs, I don\u2019t do any of that stuff \u2014 I just want to get into the meeting to network with people,\u201d he says, laughing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m counting down the days,\u201d Tumbaga adds about his highly anticipated 21st birthday in January. \u201cI\u2019m not even going to drink on my birthday. I\u2019m not going to Vegas.
