(Her late mother was Samoan, born and raised on the island of Upolu, and Taimane grew up on O\u2018ahu and, briefly, New Zealand.) But true to style, she\u2019s infusing the performance with an aura of mythology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the mystical side of things, the fantasy side of things,\u201d she admits. \u201cI think people really enjoy going there \u2026 \u2018Is it real? Photo by Lawrence Tabudlo<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In Taimane\u2019s artistic interpretation, it is the setting for an epic quest undertaken by a young girl named Maluhia, who must pass through Hawaiki to find her mana, or inner strength.<\/p>\n<p>To help bring the story to life, Taimane has gathered a cast of more than a dozen artists \u2014 musicians, dancers, spoken-word poets, aerialists \u2014 to transform the stage into a tropical Mount Olympus. PHOTO COURTESY JOE MARQUEZ<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Origin Story<\/h3>\n<p>Maluhia is a fictional character and <em>Hawaiki<\/em> is not, strictly speaking, about Taimane. PHOTO COURTESY JOE MARQUEZ<\/p><\/div>\n<p>From her mother, Taimane got not just her beauty and her name \u2014 which is Samoan for diamond \u2014 but also her ear for music and love of the stage. From her father, she got her first \u2018ukulele and the encouragement to take it as far as it would go \u2014 the lesson that a diamond earns its sparkle by enduring pressure.<\/p>\n<p>She cut her teeth at age 5 by taking \u2018ukulele classes from Mike Vasquez and Roy Sakuma, and by age 7 was busking on Kal\u0101kaua Avenue (with Dad standing by for security). PHOTO COURTESY NPR\/ LAUREN BELTRAN VILLAMIZAR<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt was a great way to hone what songs worked and what songs didn\u2019t work,\u201d she says. \u201cIt also kind of shaped me, the type of performer I am, which is very in your face and fiery because of the audience I was playing for \u2014 tourists who loved to hear what they recognized (and) drunk people. It was a great way to focus my \u2018ukulele skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It all paid off when someone from Don Ho\u2019s show saw her and introduced her to the late, great <em>Tiny Bubbles<\/em> singer himself. The popular local entertainer included her in his weekly show at the \u2018Ohana Waik\u012bk\u012b Beachcomber Hotel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUncle Don\u201d helped 13-year-old Taimane take her skills to the next level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery now and then Uncle Don would put me on the spot and say, \u2018Sing this!\u2019\u201d she recalls. \u201cAnd I would be like, \u2018I don\u2019t know this song!\u2019 And he\u2019d say, \u2018You\u2019ll learn it, it\u2019s fine.\u2019 Or he\u2019d say, \u2018Tell me a joke,\u2019 and I\u2019d always get scared like, \u2018Aaah! I don\u2019t know!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But she pushed through those fears and emerged on the other side a seasoned pro who could keep an audience entertained while restringing an \u2018uke at lightning speed, no sweat, if, say, a cord snapped while she was ripping through a Led Zeppelin song.<\/p>\n<h3>Creative Crossroads<\/h3>\n<p>Although technically still a child, teenage Taimane was at the top of the \u2018ukulele game, with many comparing her to another former teacher of hers, Jake Shimabukuro.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to holding down a paid gig with Don Ho, she was still entering \u2014 and, more often than not, winning \u2014 \u2018ukulele competitions. Soon she would add l\u016b\u02bbau and corporate events to her repertoire, then shows and festivals in Las Vegas, New York and Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Her skills earned her lots of media attention as well. All of this was great \u2014 to this day, she makes sure to let people know that she\u2019s a total ham who loves the limelight \u2014 but it doesn\u2019t mean every- thing was smooth sailing.<\/p>\n<p>To pursue her dream, she had to forsake traditional coming-of-age milestones like school dances and other ceremonies. And even if she could play <em>Wipe Out<\/em> blindfolded or with an \u2018uke behind her head, too much of the same thing can take a toll.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was kind of getting a little burnt out doing the same surf songs over and over,\u201d she says. \u201cI was having a hard time, like, \u2018I don\u2019t know if I want to do this anymore.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At this point in our heroine\u2019s journey, we find her at a crossroads. She was a student at Kapi\u2018olani Community College and appeared to be in a comfortable place musically \u2014 but comfort can stymie creative growth.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, this was in the late 2000s and early 2010s, during the initial days of the First Friday art walks, when a new creative energy was sweeping through Honolulu\u2019s Chinatown. The hip, artsy crowd would gather to check out the district\u2019s boutiques, restaurants and live entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy friend took me to this place in Chinatown, this old place called Ong King Arts Center,\u201d Taimane says. \u201cIt was artsy collaborations with dancers and original (music) only, so that kind of rekindled my fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ong King Arts Center \u2014 which, unfortunately, closed in 2019 \u2014 provided a safe space for Taimane, now a young woman, to explore her artistic voice. She remembers playing intimate open mic sessions in front of a supportive audience and meeting like-minded creators and musicians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was truly a perfect place for me to try new things,\u201d she says. \u201cI was able to try new songs and new themes, such as circus, planetary and underwater, which molded my (later) shows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaii.carpentermediagroup.com\/midweekhawaii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/taimane-hawaiki-nt-3-art-direction-ries-photography-paul-strouse-tg.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1067\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2091\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hawaii.carpentermediagroup.com\/midweekhawaii\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2023\/08\/taimane-hawaiki-nt-3-art-direction-ries-photography-paul-strouse-tg.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/hawaii.carpentermediagroup.com\/midweekhawaii\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2023\/08\/taimane-hawaiki-nt-3-art-direction-ries-photography-paul-strouse-tg.jpeg?resize=337,450 337w, https:\/\/hawaii.carpentermediagroup.com\/midweekhawaii\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2023\/08\/taimane-hawaiki-nt-3-art-direction-ries-photography-paul-strouse-tg.jpeg?resize=768,1024 768w, https:\/\/hawaii.carpentermediagroup.com\/midweekhawaii\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2023\/08\/taimane-hawaiki-nt-3-art-direction-ries-photography-paul-strouse-tg.jpeg?resize=335,447 335w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Back to Chinatown<\/h3>\n<p>Those artistic explorations would lead to original compositions that blended surf songs with flamenco, classical music, rock \u2019n\u2019 roll and her own vocals \u2014 a sound that set her apart from other \u2018ukulele masters.<\/p>\n<p>The fusion of artistic vision and charismatic stage presence garnered her even more attention, which led to more gigs at even bigger venues.<\/p>\n<p>Taimane can\u2019t remember off the top of her head all of the places the \u2018ukulele has taken her over the years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsrael, Hong Kong, Tai- wan, New Zealand, Samoa, Tahiti,\u201d she says. \u201cAll over the U.S. (including) Alaska. I haven\u2019t been to much of South America, just Costa Rica. But all over Europe. The most random and farthest place is Reunion Island, which is off of Madagascar, so the complete opposite side (of the world) from Hawai\u2018i.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s won numerous N\u0101 H\u014dk\u016b Hanohano awards \u2014 this year alone she took home the top prizes for Instrumental Composition, Instrumental Album and Favorite Entertainer \u2014 and landed on the Grammy Awards\u2019 list of five emerging Pacific Islander artists to know.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s performed before tens of thousands with Michael Franti and Spearhead at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado and became the first musician from Hawai\u2018i to be featured on NPR\u2019s <em>Tiny Desk Concert<\/em> (her episode has been viewed by millions online).<\/p>\n<p>Yet if you ask her to name the most memorable place she\u2019s ever played, she\u2019ll tell you without hesitation: \u201cIt\u2019s Ong King Arts Center. That was just such a very specific, special time for me. It was like, \u2018Oh, my God, I think I found what I\u2019 m supposed to be doing.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And so the story brings us back to Chinatown, where the real Taimane found her artistic mana, and to <em>Hawaiki<\/em>, wherein the fictional Maluhia must set out on her own quest across the transformed stage of Hawai\u2018i Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>This magical melding of stories and music will transpire for only a few hours on one special night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether you\u2019re an avid fan or just curious to see me, come to this show,\u201d Taimane says. \u201cI\u2019ve even told my mainland and international fans \u2014 this is the show, fly in for it. This is the most important show of the year for me. This is the show I\u2019m putting everything into.
