Cam Do is creating quite the \u201cbuzz\u201d on social media as he transforms the hairstyling industry one viral video at a time.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Take a seat in Cam Do\u2019s salon chair and you can expect to have not just your appearance transformed, but your life as well.<\/p>\n

Despite starting his career as a barber just three years ago, Do has already taken the internet by storm with his trending videos, which have garnered millions of views from more than 800,000 followers on his Instagram account (@_cambarber). <\/p>\n

Chances are you\u2019ve seen those videos; they\u2019re hard to miss with eye-catching titles like \u201cPlease Save My Marriage,\u201d \u201cMy Girlfriend Leaving Me,\u201d and \u201cFrom John Wick to Who.\u201d Amazingly, people fly in from all over the world to have Do perform his hairstyling magic on them out of the chair he rents at KingCuts X KBeauty in Honolulu. <\/p>\n

\u201cI always treat my client like my friend,\u201d Do says. \u201cIf you treat them like a friend, they\u2019ll treat you like a friend. If you treat them like a customer, they\u2019ll treat you like a barber. I\u2019m just having fun with them. I\u2019m like, \u2018Hey! You want to shoot a video together? Let\u2019s make some good memories.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

His videos feature him asking clients questions, including why they came to see him and what works and doesn\u2019t work for their hairstyle \u2014 with hilarious clips of viral videos mixed into the recordings. The videos end with a reveal that often leads viewers to conclude it\u2019s a whole different person from the one they saw at the start of the video.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead of the haircut, I\u2019m focused on making my client look good,\u201d Do explains. \u201cTo boost their confidence, I try my best to make them look handsome. And the hair transformation is from that. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think I\u2019m the first guy doing (videos like that), and now, so many people in the industry \u2026 know about me and are starting to learn from me, and I think after that, after one year, the whole (hairstyling\/barber) industry is changing.\u201d<\/p>\n

For many, Do\u2019s laid-back, fun-loving demeanor is also what makes their hair-cutting experience so enjoyable. It\u2019s why he\u2019s able to have his patrons be so vulnerable with him on camera.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of the clients have cried. They cry after seeing how they look so different. Some of them are really surprised,\u201d the hairstylist reflects. \u201cI\u2019m not saying I\u2019m the best barber or anything like that, but to see that, it really makes me feel like I\u2019m spending my time and my hard work to make somebody feel good, to make them feel different, make them change.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know how to say (it) but that means a lot to me,\u201d he adds. \u201cI feel like I\u2019m doing the right thing and I just need to keep going. That\u2019s my motivation.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Do is skilled at transforming hairstyles for the better, perhaps the biggest transformation has been his own.<\/p>\n

When he was 15, Do emigrated from Vietnam to Hawai\u2018i. That was in 2012. He had been raised by his grandparents in Vietnam after his mother left to work here in the islands. <\/p>\n

\u201c(I\u2019ve) seen my mom maybe only one time in my life in Vietnam,\u201d recalls Do. \u201cShe came back, maybe when I\u2019m super young but I don\u2019t remember her. All I know about her was a picture of her.\u201d<\/p>\n

While he was eager for a new life in Hawai\u2018i, the move brought its share of challenges.<\/p>\n

\u201cI came here by myself. No English \u2014 no anything,\u201d he says. \u201cThe first two years was super tough because you have to start everything over again. All my childhood is gone from Vietnam.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the first two years, I get really strong depression because it\u2019s so different from what I thought. Because I came here, I don\u2019t know the language, I don\u2019t see my grandparents, I don\u2019t have friends or anything. <\/p>\n

Do admits he was bullied at school, and was often teased about his accent. The mocking even led him to consider ending his life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think one time (I was) thinking about almost (committing) suicide, but my grandparents popped up in my mind,\u201d shares Do. \u201cFrom that, I started changing my whole life \u2026 I put in my mind, I\u2019m like, \u2018OK, I\u2019m just gonna do everything by myself.\u2019 <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I\u2019m changing myself, everything around me is changing,\u201d he adds. \u201cNow, I\u2019m here. I\u2019m still living. I\u2019m happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Do\u2019s interest in hairstyling developed about five years ago after he serendipitously stumbled upon a YouTube video of a barber giving a homeless man a haircut. \u201cThat\u2019s so cool,\u201d Do recalls thinking, and soon after he enrolled at Hawai\u2018i Institute of Hair Design.<\/p>\n

The journey hasn\u2019t been easy. Do had to fight self-doubt and work extra hard \u2014 offering to cut his friends\u2019 hair anytime, anyplace, and working for free at nearby salons just to see how they cut hair. He\u2019d attend school from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays before rushing to his uncle\u2019s restaurant to work. He also worked as a driver for Uber and Lyft, and delivered food on weekends so he could send money back to his grandparents. <\/p>\n

Eventually, his perseverance paid off. He landed his first hairstyling job at Jenny\u2019s Barber Hairstyling in \u2018Aiea. After two years there, he decided to go solo at KingCuts X KBeauty.
\n\u201cI still have so many things to learn; I\u2019m not there yet,\u201d Do says. \u201cIt\u2019s only the beginning. I\u2019m gonna keep going, I\u2019m not gonna stop.\u201d <\/p>\n

The hairstylist recently released his own e-book, Discover Your Perfect Hairstyle in 10 Minutes: A Guide to Face Shapes and Hairstyles. In it, Do covers the many face shapes, how to measure them and his recommendations for each face type.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody is so unique,\u201d he says. \u201cEverybody has different hair shapes, face shapes, different colors, skin colors. You cannot apply just one style for everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Do\u2019s career continues to soar, his grandparents\u2019 advice has stayed with him: \u201cNever forget where you come from.\u201d <\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Do returned to Vietnam for its Lunar New Year celebration. He passed out food and red envelopes filled with money to the less fortunate.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always want to support because I come from a poor family,\u201d he says. \u201cI always want to help people. I want to show people that I do more than just cut hair.\u201d<\/p>\n

Do offers his own advice to those chasing their dreams.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust do it consistently. Don\u2019t give up. Believe in yourself. You have to look at yourself, and say \u2018Hey you\u2019re more than that \u2026 you can do more than that,\u2019 and just do it, and the results will come.<\/p>\n
