{"id":2606,"date":"2025-08-06T00:00:23","date_gmt":"2025-08-06T10:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hawaii.carpentermediagroup.com\/midweekhawaii\/?p=2606"},"modified":"2025-08-05T16:47:32","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T02:47:32","slug":"the-beat-goes-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hawaii.carpentermediagroup.com\/midweekhawaii\/the-beat-goes-on\/","title":{"rendered":"The Beat Goes On"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_2607\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2607\" class=\"wp-image-2607 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaii.carpentermediagroup.com\/midweekhawaii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/16mar06-0360-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"1132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hawaii.carpentermediagroup.com\/midweekhawaii\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2025\/08\/16mar06-0360-copy.jpg 750w, https:\/\/hawaii.carpentermediagroup.com\/midweekhawaii\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2025\/08\/16mar06-0360-copy.jpg?resize=298,450 298w, https:\/\/hawaii.carpentermediagroup.com\/midweekhawaii\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2025\/08\/16mar06-0360-copy.jpg?resize=678,1024 678w, https:\/\/hawaii.carpentermediagroup.com\/midweekhawaii\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2025\/08\/16mar06-0360-copy.jpg?resize=335,506 335w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2607\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Lawrence Tabudlo<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>It\u2019s 50 years and counting for taiko master <\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Kenny Endo<\/b><\/span><b>, who\u2019s planning a celebration next month for fans of the in<\/b><span class=\"s2\">fl<\/span><b>uential Japanese art form.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I<\/span><span class=\"s1\">f anyone was meant to bang away on objects and produce wondrous sounds, it\u2019s Kenny Endo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">At age 4, he became enthralled with beats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Dum, dum, dum, dum.<\/i><i><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">In his pre-teens, he took his first drum lessons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Tszz-ts-ts-tszz-ts-ts-tszz.<\/i><i><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">As a high schooler, he rode the snap, crack and buzz of the snare drum as a band member.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Rat-a-tat-tat-tat, rat-a-tat-tat-tat.<\/i><i><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">And as a young adult, he\u2019d find every opportunity to beat out rhythms to his favorite classic rock, jazz, Latin or funk tunes on his trusty drum kit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Ba-dum-tss!<\/i><i><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">To Endo, the sounds produced by a drum aren\u2019t just to be heard \u201cwith your ears,\u201d but felt \u201cdown in your bones.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt\u2019s a very powerful experience,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Yet nothing could compare to his introduction to taiko, and the thundering, ritualistic sounds that would emanate from these large, barrel-shaped Japanese instruments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!<\/i><i><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt was a sound that struck me \u2026 I was really influenced by it,\u201d says Endo when recalling the first time he heard the taiko drum beat coming from an ensemble in the 1970s. \u201cAs soon as I heard it, I said, \u2018Oh, man, I gotta do this.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">That he did \u2014 and he\u2019s been thumping away on drum skins ever since. Now comes his golden anniversary as an influential taiko drummer and ambassador for the Japanese art form that traces its roots back to the 6th century CE. Called \u201cMA vs. Groove,\u201d Endo\u2019s 50th anniversary celebration\/tour is scheduled for Aug. 9-15 in Honolulu, and consists of concerts, workshops, lectures, demonstrations and a film premiere. (See accompanying story on page 13 for more details.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The tour will continue with concerts on two neighbor islands: Kahilu Theatre in Waimea, Hawai\u02bbi island, Sept. 19; and Anaina Hou Community Park in Waimea, Kaua\u02bbi, Sept. 20. Thereafter, Endo and his ensemble will travel to Ohio, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and California for several fall performance dates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cTaiko drumming can be very hypnotic, very soothing and can actually put people in a good place,\u201d says Endo, whose taiko journey began in 1975 when he was accepted into the Los Angeles-based taiko group Kinnara Taiko. \u201cMy hope is that people will not only enjoy and be entertained by our art form, but it will inspire them to develop their own passions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThere\u2019s also a potential for performing arts to bring people together, to bridge cultures and to inspire people to do good rather than to do no good,\u201d he adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The taiko master says he came up with the name for the event by juxtaposing two contrasting concepts of Japanese rhythm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe word \u2018ma\u2019 means \u2018space,\u2019 and in music, it refers to the space between sounds,\u201d Endo explains. \u201cThat\u2019s very important in Japanese music because you\u2019re taught to maintain the energy even at rest \u2014 when you\u2019re not making a sound but there\u2019s still energy happening.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">As for the thought behind the word \u201cgroove,\u201d Endo points to the Japanese term \u201cnori.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis isn\u2019t the nori that you put on your sushi, but the nori taken from the verb noru, which means to ride on,\u201d he explains. \u201cThat\u2019s the term for playing in the groove, or playing the swing or, as we sometimes say, playing in the pocket.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Interestingly, Endo didn\u2019t have to think too long and hard to come up with the name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c\u2018MA vs. Groove\u2019 was actually the title of a concert I did back in 1990 after I had been living in Japan for 10 years. I thought because it was 35 years later, I should just use the same title as kind of a work in progress,\u201d he says. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I<\/span><span class=\"s1\">n 1980, Endo had a decision to make: either move to New York and pursue a career as a professional rock\/jazz\/funk drummer, or relocate to Japan and fully immerse himself in taiko. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">He chose the latter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI had a real curiosity about my roots and my cultural heritage. Both my parents were citizens of Japan and, although I grew up in the United States, I could understand Japanese, even though I didn\u2019t speak it well,\u201d explains Endo, who was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Initially, he only intended to stay in Japan for a year, but those plans changed once he realized \u201chow little I knew about taiko.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Ultimately, \u201cone year turned into 10 years very quickly,\u201d he adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">In that decade of living abroad, Endo mastered three drumming styles: kumi-daiko (group), hogaku hayashi (classical) and matsuri bayashi (festival). He also became the first foreigner to receive a natori (stage name) in hogaku hayashi. The name he took was Mochizuki Tajiro.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Aside from performing with notable talents, such as Bobby McFerrin and for icons like Michael Jackson and Prince, Endo had the honor of traveling to Moscow in 1989 to entertain Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev. He also had the distinct privilege of interacting with many other Russians on that occasion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe people over there treated us so well, and we had such a great experience, but I had this realization that people are the same everywhere,\u201d he says. \u201cAs an American growing up, I was told, \u2018Russia is your enemy.\u2019 But I realized then that it\u2019s the governments that are fighting people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Taiko, he believes, is a bridge that helps to bring people together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIn ancient Japan, they would have drummers come out to instill courage in soldiers before they went to battle. But my feeling has always been that if the drums have that much power to inspire soldiers to war, then it can also be used to inspire people to bring peace in the world,\u201d says the 72-year-old Endo. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThat\u2019s the potential I see with taiko.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">In 1990, Endo moved his family \u2014 consisting of wife, Chizuko, and their two young sons, Miles and Zen \u2014 to the islands to pursue his graduate work in ethnomusicology at University of Hawai\u02bbi at M\u0101noa. Soon after, the couple opened the Taiko Center of the Pacific, which today still educates people of all ages in traditional and contemporary Japanese drumming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMy career has opened many doors and taken\u00a0me around the world,\u201d Endo says. \u201cI\u2019ve learned about the power of music and culture to transform\u00a0peoples\u2019 lives and outlooks.
