Makeke Kapolei Offers Once-A-Month Cultural Workshops
Hawaiian cultural practitioner Kawika Au visited Makeke Kapolei June 7 as an installment of the market’s new hands-on workshops series, “Integrating Hawaiian Cultural Practices within Makeke Kapolei: Ma Ka Hana Ka Ike, Learn by Doing.” Au taught attendees how to create and play the ohe hano ihu (bamboo nose flute).
The series, which is coordinated by the Malama Learning Center in conjunction with the Hawaii Tourism Authority and Hawaiian Electric Industries, aims to build awareness, respect and appreciation for sustainable Hawaiian cultural practices. The workshops will feature local cultural practitioners, artisans and musicians.
