More than 600 elementary students gathered at University of Hawaii-Manoa’s Urban Garden Center in Pearl City Feb. 10 for the 2012 Oahu Agriculture and Environmental Awareness Day.
The 30-acre Urban Garden Center is a resource facility for gardening information, ideas and educational activities.
The annual Agriculture and Environmental Awareness Day is hosted by the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources’ (CTAHR) Oahu Cooperative Extension Office and Office of Academic and Student Affairs. The event is designed to provide students, teachers and the community with awareness and understanding of agriculture and the environment. It also aims to introduce students to career opportunities in agricultural and environmental studies.
Organizations including Natural Resources Conservation Service and Monsanto joined CTAHR to host various educational booths.
Participating schools included Hauula, Haleiwa, Iliahi, Waikele and Wheeler elementary schools, Holy Family Catholic Academy, Voyager and Myron B. Thompson Academy Public Charter Schools, Christian Academy, Calvary Chapel Christian School and St. Joseph School.
