After 35 years at the Prince Kuhio Federal Building downtown, the Honolulu Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigations has moved to new quarters in Kapolei.
An April 9 ceremony, with a Hawaiian blessing and untying of a maile lei, officially marked the opening of the new 10-acre Kalaeloa site at 91-1300 Enterprise Ave.
The 160,000-square-foot building houses about 200 FBI workers, who oversee operations in Hawaii, as well as in Guam, Saipan and American Samoa.
“We outgrew our space in the federal building both physically and technologically,” said FBI special agent Thomas Simon of the decision to move to “the most modern office building in Hawaii.”
A photovoltaic system supplies power to the building, which was has an environmentally conscious design. The green elements conform to LEED’s (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) stringent specifications.
In addition to office space, the facility also comprises an automotive and electronic repairs annex and a secure parking structure.
