Thirteen teams of architects, builders and allied design and engineering professionals gathered Oct. 12 at Pearlridge Center to compete in the eighth annual CANstruction project.
Working for six hours, the teams created elaborate structures made entirely of canned food – all of which will be donated to Hawaii Foodbank. This year’s theme was CAN-struction Wonders of the World.
Over the past seven years, CANstruction has brought in 248,543 pounds of canned food – which equates to about 200,000 meals.
The winners are as follows: Jurors’ Favorite: “Moai” by Richard Matsunaga & Associates Architects; Structural Ingenuity “Roman Colosseum” by Ferraro Choi and Associates/WSP Group; Best Use of Labels: “Kilauea VolCANo – Hawaiian Wonder” by WATG; Best Meal: “Bridging the Hunger Gap from CAN Francisco to Honolulu” by SSFM International; Honorable Mention: “Breaching Hunger is Not a Fluke” by HDR Engineering and “Join the Race to DRIVE Out Hunger” by ADM Retail Planning & Architecture.
Members of the public still have their chance to name the People’s Choice Award winner and help Hawaii Foodbank. One donated can is equivalent to one vote, and votes should be cast by this Sunday, when the pieces will be “de-canstructed” and sent to the food bank.
