Colin Kubota always has been a student of soccer. This season, as his Kailua High School team approaches the midway point of its OIA season, he’s already played goalkeeper, sweeper, right half-back, left half-back, center-midfielder and forward, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.<\/p>\n
“Basically, wherever they put me, I’ll play,” said Kubota, a sophomore. “I’ve been playing all over. It gives me a different view of the game and gets me ready for the game in the future if I want to play a different position. This gives me an idea of what position suits me best.”<\/p>\n
At present, Kubota and the Surfriders are on a mission to become playoff-eligible after dropping their first two league games. Kailua returns to action at 4 p.m. Saturday at Kahuku. Kubota recently took some time away from the practice field to visit with MidWeek<\/I>‘s Windward Islander<\/I>.<\/p>\n
What is your earliest sports-related memory? <\/B>Being with my dad on the soccer field, just kicking the ball around and waiting for the other kids to arrive for (AYSO) practice. My dad was my coach, and I was always excited to see who my teammates would be.<\/p>\n
What’s the best part of playing in the Kailua program? <\/B>When my sister (KeriAnne) and brother (Cameron) played here, I always liked watching them. I like holding up the family tradition, and it gives me more of a sense of pride in my school.<\/p>\n
What areas of your game did you focus on during the off-season and on your own time? <\/B>Mainly, my ball control and working on my touches on the ball.<\/p>\n
Who’s had the biggest impact on your life? <\/B>My dad, because he’s always been the one coaching me in soccer and baseball. He was always there to support me, and he’s a great teacher.<\/p>\n
What Internet site do you frequent the most? <\/B>Instagram.<\/p>\n
What is your least favorite household chore? <\/B>Cleaning my room.<\/p>\n
What movie could you watch over and over? <\/B>That would be tough. I have a lot of favorites. I think it would be Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol<\/I>.<\/p>\n
Who is your most competitive teammate at practice? <\/B>Max Irons. He’s really supportive of his teammates. Overall, he’s a good player.<\/p>\n
What’s in your iPod? <\/B>All types of music. Mainly, techno music or hip hop.<\/p>\n
How do you like to spend your free time? <\/B>Hanging out with friends, listening to music and reading. I also like doing outdoors-type things, like going to the beach.<\/p>\n
How many text messages do you send\/receive a day? <\/B>Maybe about 500.<\/p>\n
If you could have your pick, what celebrity would you choose as your prom date? <\/B>(Actress) Grace Park.<\/p>\n
