The Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs will host a number of events throughout March connected with the celebration of Prince Kuhio Day later this month, including the Kapolei Prince Kuhio Hoolaulea from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 9 at the Prince Kuhio Community Center in Kapolei.<\/p>\n
The hoolaulea will feature local entertainment, food and craft vendors, Hawaiian craft demonstrations and makahiki games.<\/p>\n
Health screenings for diabetes and high blood pressure also will be available.<\/p>\n
Prince Kuhio Day, which is March 26, celebrates Hawaiian Civic Clubs founder Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole, who was prince when the government under Queen Liliuokalani was overthrown. He went on to serve as a Hawaii delegate to the United States Congress.<\/p>\n
Prince Kuhio founded the first Hawaiian Civic Club in 1918.<\/p>\n
The Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs advocates for the improved welfare of Native Hawaiians in culture, health, economic development, social welfare and more. The association is comprised of 58 clubs throughout the state, as well as in several other states on the Mainland.<\/p>\n
