Pets (and their humans) are invited to attend Hawaiian Humane Society’s Pet Kokua Event Aug. 24 at Nanakuli Intermediate and High School. The festival, which runs from 9 to 11 a.m., features pet-friendly demonstrations packed with information on responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.<\/p>\n
“We’re meeting with teachers, youth leaders and educators and finding ways we can partner together to promote compassion (for animals) in the area,” said Bonnie Oda, manager of educational outreach with the Hawaiian Humane Society. “This will be the first of a couple of Leeward area events like this.”<\/p>\n
An educational presentation begins at 9 a.m., and attendees must participate in order to receive a Pet Kokua Pass, which grants access to free services including on-site microchipping for pets, pet food for eligible Pet Foodbank recipients, games and prizes, and veterinarian advice. Veterinarians at the Ask-A-Vet booth will include MidWeek <\/I>columnist Dr. John Kaya and Dr. Joe Herzog.<\/p>\n
“We’re going to have a game wheel where people can take a quiz … and win prizes,” Oda said.<\/p>\n
There also will be a Spay & Neuter Lucky Number Ticket Giveaway, in which selected families will receive a free sterilization coupon that can be redeemed at the Hawaiian Humane Society, located at 2700 Waialae Ave.<\/p>\n
According to Oda, one coupon per household will be given out for winners, and recipients will be responsible for drop-off and pickup of their pets.<\/p>\n
“It will save them hundreds of dollars and help with the overpopulation of animals,” she explained.<\/p>\n
