A recent donation from PetSmart Mililani ensures that four-legged friends at Hawaiian Humane Society (HHS) and Oahu SPCA won’t go hungry – or have to worry about a clean litter box.<\/p>\n
The donation, made in August, totaled 6,500 pounds – a combination of food and litter that was divided evenly between the two nonprofit organizations.<\/p>\n
“(We’re focused on) building community relations within the community,” explained store manager Kevin Rokosz.<\/p>\n
Both organizations regularly partner with the store for weekly in-store adoptions of cats and dogs.<\/p>\n
“The success rate is great,” Rokosz noted. Since the store’s opening in February, 395 animals have been adopted – 226 cats and 169 dogs.<\/p>\n
Though there is a fee for each adoption, PetSmart does not make any profit from it. Instead, the store makes a donation to the respective organization each time a pet finds a home.<\/p>\n
So far, PetSmart Mililani has donated more than $52,000. Included in that total is a grant of approximately $12,500 to the Molokai Humane Society for a spay and neuter program.<\/p>\n
Its involvement in the community doesn’t stop there. The store currently plans to install “Oops” stations throughout Mililani Town Center. Each station will supply pet owners with bags to cleanly dispose of their dog’s poop. Installation is expected to begin in December.<\/p>\n
PetSmart also is working to upgrade and improve Mililani Dog Park, a project that is still in its early planning stages.<\/p>\n
Through HHS, cats are available daily in-store.<\/p>\n
HHS also brings in puppies and dogs available for adoption from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, and Oahu SPCA stops by from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays.<\/p>\n
PetSmart Mililani also offers grooming services and dog training.<\/p>\n
