Aloha surfers and beach people, <\/p>\n

We had great surf for both town and country last week. The buoys popped with 18 seconds for the first of about six separate swell events for the entire Leeward coast. It was perfect timing for the Local Motion Surf into Summer\u2019s iconic Ala Moana Bowls event. <\/p>\n

Thursday we got a solid 3-foot south-by-southwest. Friday had a smaller southby- southeast added to the mix. Saturday there were two long episodes that filled in slowly, and by Sunday we had four separate swells in the water at the same time. This is rare \u2014 very rare. <\/p>\n

What\u2019s cool is that once again a Memorial Day south swell blessed wave riders and beachgoers. It\u2019s one of those strange coincidences that have no scientific explanation, but good surf on this special holiday happens more often then you would think. It\u2019s the same for our Mother\u2019s Day swells. I think Mother Nature just likes to say thank you. <\/p>\n

I also want to say mahalo to all our men and women in uniform, and to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and for our country. <\/p>\n

By the time you read this, surf may be heading up with another south-bysouthwest swell beginning Saturday. This means more than 15 days straight of surf from Down Under. <\/p>\n

Not to be outdone, country did pump overhead this past weekend. This is the good thing about living on an island \u2014 at least somewhere there are waves and happy wave riders. <\/p>\n

Now, some notes from the world tour. <\/p>\n

Wow, or should I say, Holy Toledo! The 20-yearold, 143-pound Brazilian, Felipe Toledo, is going bonko. <\/p>\n

Felipe is the undisputed best small-wave rider (4 foot or less) on planet Earth. Don\u2019t take my word for it, ask others on tour.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Felipe is ferociously fast, super springy, and his air game and rail work are so technically sound and superior that he\u2019s easy to overlook. But watch out. If he gets his bigger wave game down (surf of 5-12 feet), he\u2019ll nail more than one world title. <\/p>\n

Toledo\u2019s domination this year is like Kelly Slater\u2019s when he came into his own in 1992. No one could touch him when he was on. The same goes for this humble, gracious family man from Ubatuba, Brazil. <\/p>\n

Toledo has won two of four events this year. Yes, we have Fiji, Tahiti and Pipe, which feature big reef lefts that can be Felipe\u2019s weakness. But we also have Jay Bay, Trestles (his favorite), France and Portugal, all spots with surf in which he excels. Pros who win three events in a year often win titles. It\u2019s that hard to do. <\/p>\n

Toledo could pass his fellow countryman Adriano De Souza for the lead and keep the title in South America for 2015. If this doesn\u2019t ruffle some American feathers, we\u2019re in for a long run of Brazilian storms. Let\u2019s get some sunshine back stateside. <\/p>\n

Right now, the U.S. has Nat Young from Santa Cruz, Calif., in fifth, Hawaii\u2019s own John John Florence in seventh and Slater outside the top 10 in 13th place. The top four in the world rankings are from Brazil and Australia, while the rest of the top 10 are six Aussies, two Brazilians and two Americans (California and Hawaii). <\/p>\n

Reminders and events: The Surf N Sea Haleiwa SUP Race is May 30, the same day of the Roxy Run, SUP and Yoga at Turtle Bay Resort. The Greenroom Art Festival at Waikiki Shell is May 31, and June kicks off with the 19th annual China\u2019s Wahine Surfing Classic June 6-7 at Queen\u2019s Surf. <\/p>\n
