\nAs Rotary celebrates 100 years in Hawaii, the club\u2019s\u00a0international president stops in Hawaii to offer congratulations\u00a0and to check on some of local Rotarians\u2019 service projects.<\/strong><\/p>\n

T<\/span>he Rotary Club,\u00a0which celebrates its\u00a0centennial in\u00a0Hawaii this year, derives its\u00a0name from the fact that club\u00a0meetings would rotate from\u00a0business to business each\u00a0month in its hometown of\u00a0Chicago.<\/p>\n

But in looking at its 100\u00a0years of service in the Islands,\u00a0it may better be thought of as\u00a0the rotation of an enormous\u00a0circle of good deeds that begins\u00a0when you help another without\u00a0looking for anything in return.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one is ever successful\u00a0without a hell of a lot of people\u00a0supporting him. I get very\u00a0annoyed when someone says\u00a0\u2018self-made man,\u2019\u201d say K.R.\u00a0Ravindran, president of Rotary\u00a0International, who was in town\u00a0last week to mark the centennial\u00a0of the Hawaii chapter.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only self-made person\u00a0is God,\u201d he continues. \u201cEvery\u00a0person was made because\u00a0someone, somewhere helped\u00a0him. Someone gave you\u00a0money or your parents sent\u00a0you to school or nurtured you\u00a0when you were sick. Rotary\u00a0allows you to pay back what\u00a0others have done for you. If I\u00a0give you a glass of water, you\u00a0cannot repay me by simply\u00a0giving me back a glass of\u00a0water. You often don\u2019t have a\u00a0chance of returning favors\u00a0done for you. I often do others\u00a0favors, and the only thing I say\u00a0in return is go help someone\u00a0else.\u201d<\/p>\n

Locally, Rotarians boast a\u00a0\u201cService Above Self\u201d mantra\u00a0that can be seen in programs\u00a0such as the Visitor Aloha\u00a0Society of Hawaii (VASH), the\u00a0Children\u2019s Justice Center and\u00a0WeVoteHawaii. They conduct\u00a0vision testing in schools,\u00a0cleanups at parks, and this year,\u00a0to celebrate their anniversary,\u00a0Rotarians are renovating the\u00a0Boys & Girls Club Charles C.\u00a0Spalding Clubhouse gym to\u00a0the tune of $150,000, and were\u00a0pleased to have Ravindran\u00a0come and visit the facility.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is an honor to have him\u00a0here,\u201d says Del Green, Rotary\u00a0district governor of Hawaii. \u201cIt\u00a0is a short visit but very meaningful,\u00a0as he is a very busy man\u00a0and it is not very often you get\u00a0a sitting president to visit us\u00a0here in the Islands.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is, in fact, Ravindran\u2019s\u00a0first trip to Hawaii, despite having\u00a0flown over it many times\u00a0commuting from his home\u00a0country of Sri Lanka to the\u00a0Rotary International offices in\u00a0Evanston, Ill. The reason for\u00a0his absence out here \u2014 besides\u00a0running an organization of 1.2\u00a0million members \u2014 is that he\u00a0has 32,000 clubs in 200 countries\u00a0that are all clamoring for\u00a0his attention.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are more diversified\u00a0than the U.N.,\u201d says Ravindran\u00a0proudly, \u201cand they all put pressure\u00a0on you to come. I try not\u00a0to spend too much time in the\u00a0air because it is to no one\u2019s benefit\u00a0when you are up in the\u00a0sky.\u201d<\/p>\n

S<\/span>o how does a simple\u00a0man from an island\u00a0nation off the coast of\u00a0India rise to the head of an\u00a0organization that has counted\u00a0such luminaries such as\u00a0President Warren Harding,\u00a0author Thomas Mann and Dr.\u00a0Charles Mayo as members?<\/p>\n

It all began in the tea fields\u00a0of Sri Lanka, where his grandfather\u00a0raised Ceylon tea, some\u00a0of the best tea in the world.\u00a0Their fields were on a mountainside,\u00a0a mile up from the\u00a0island\u2019s pristine beaches, the\u00a0landscape dotted with elephants\u00a0and sound-tracked by\u00a0waterfalls.<\/p>\n

Life was good for the\u00a0Ravindran family \u2014 until the\u00a0socialist government took over\u00a0in 1972 and stripped the family\u00a0of their land and resources.\u00a0Their paradise was gone, and\u00a0the young Ravindran needed\u00a0a way to make a living.<\/p>\n

So a young man adrift in the\u00a0world looked to a group that\u00a0had helped his father and\u00a0grandfather find their way:\u00a0Rotary.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey had very high\u00a0philosophies and principles,\u00a0and I was just 21 and starting\u00a0a job, and I joined it for fun,\u00a0for friendship. I was leading a\u00a0lonely life on the plantations\u00a0in the mountains,\u201d remembers\u00a0Ravindran.<\/p>\n

The organization helped\u00a0him make the connections he\u00a0would need to begin his new\u00a0venture: tea bag manufacturing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt all gets shipped out of Sri\u00a0Lanka in tea chests or big\u00a0sacks, and I realized that no\u00a0one drinks tea out of a chest,\u201d\u00a0says Ravindran. \u201cSo I decided\u00a0to set up high-quality packaging\u00a0because then maybe the\u00a0business would start going to\u00a0Sri Lanka, and that is exactly\u00a0what happened; it just was the\u00a0right time for the right thing,\u00a0no great credit to me. I have no\u00a0false illusions about myself \u2014\u00a0I am just an ordinary guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite his humbleness, the\u00a0company, Printcare, has grown\u00a0to be one of the biggest manufacturers\u00a0of tea bags in the\u00a0world, but it would never even\u00a0have cranked out its first bag\u00a0if it were not for the connections\u00a0he made at the club.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I started my business,\u00a0I went to many banks,\u00a0and they all wanted security\u00a0and I was not in a position to\u00a0give it to them,\u201d says\u00a0Ravindran. \u201cBut I went into\u00a0one bank and the banker was\u00a0a Rotarian, and he said he\u00a0would trust me because I was\u00a0a Rotarian.\u201d<\/p>\n

These business connections\u00a0are important, but the real work\u00a0of the Rotary is done in helping\u00a0others.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn business, everyone can\u00a0make money; that is not a big\u00a0deal,\u201d says Ravindran. \u201cBut\u00a0when you leave a place, you\u00a0should leave such a big hole in\u00a0the community that they are\u00a0dying to have you back. It is\u00a0not enough to just make\u00a0money; the community around\u00a0you does not benefit because\u00a0you are there. Instead, we build\u00a0schools, we give jobs to the\u00a0kids, even building toilets,\u00a0because many girls stop going\u00a0to schools because there are no\u00a0proper toilet facilities. So even\u00a0by just building toilets we\u00a0allow girls to continue their\u00a0education.\u201d<\/p>\n

Each Rotary Club has its\u00a0own focus. Here in Hawaii,\u00a0Rotarians are helping rebuild\u00a0a youth center, in India they are\u00a0focused on literacy, and in\u00a0Africa they are working to get\u00a0people clean water and stop the\u00a0spread of AIDS. But there is\u00a0one overarching cause to\u00a0which they are all committed:\u00a0the eradication of polio.<\/p>\n

According to Ravindran,\u00a0this goal may be achieved by\u00a0the end of this year, as they\u00a0look to root it out of the last\u00a0three countries suffering from\u00a0it: Pakistan, Afghanistan and\u00a0Nigeria. He was at the forefront\u00a0of its eradication in Sri\u00a0Lanka, even going so far as\u00a0negotiating with Liberation\u00a0Tigers of Tamil Eelam in the\u00a0early \u201990s to allow immunizations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe persuaded the militants\u00a0to have a ceasefire for two days\u00a0so we could do this \u2014 they\u00a0said if the government would\u00a0agree then they would agree,\u201d\u00a0says Ravindran. \u201cWe had a\u00a0problem because if we were\u00a0linked to the militants then we\u00a0would go to jail, but they sent\u00a0us a letter, I do not know how\u00a0we got it, that said, \u2018Our war\u00a0is not with children,\u2019 and we\u00a0immunized millions during\u00a0those Days of Tranquility.\u201d<\/p>\n

Polio is now a thing of the\u00a0past in Sri Lanka, but the\u00a0Rotarian work continues,\u00a0though they have seen a\u00a0decline in membership in\u00a0recent years, as have all service\u00a0organizations. Ravindran\u00a0believes that is not because of\u00a0people\u2019s hearts changing, but\u00a0the longer commitments people\u00a0have to give to work and\u00a0the increased connectivity provided\u00a0by the Internet from sites\u00a0like LinkedIn and Facebook\u00a0that allow business connections\u00a0to happen without getting\u00a0together at a civic club.<\/p>\n

But while the importance of\u00a0business connections may have\u00a0lessened, there is still a world\u00a0of people who need a helping\u00a0hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a role for people\u00a0who are service-minded,\u201d says\u00a0Ravindran. \u201cThis allows you\u00a0to step outside of your own self\u00a0for a day or a week. Not everyone\u00a0can be a Martin Luther\u00a0King Jr. or a Mother Teresa, but\u00a0if you join Rotary you can be\u00a0a Mother Teresa for one day.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
