With an alluring personality and a charming online show, celebrity fisherman Will Williams is proving he’s got the positive touch with viewers.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n Chronicling fishing stories for the masses has been a part of the local milieu since TV shows featuring Hari Kojima and Mike Sakamoto first aired decades ago. In recent times, however, many of these celebrity fishermen have chosen a different path, wading into social media waters in order to record their adventures.<\/p>\n Among these is Will Williams, the star and creator of his own YouTube channel. While the avid angler isn’t the household name that Kojima (Let’s Go Fishing<\/em>) and Sakamoto (Fishing Tales with Mike Sakamoto<\/em>) once were, he’s definitely someone making ripples in the online fishing community with his brand of \u201cthe big fish that got away\u201d narratives.<\/p>\n \u201cI was inspired to create a channel because there were some things that would happen out on the water that I knew people wouldn’t really believe,\u201d explains Williams. \u201cThey’d just pass it off as fish tales.\u201d<\/p>\n To help their unbelief, Williams turned to his trusty GoPro camera in 2019 and, with occasional assistance from others including wife Sabrina \u2014 who he says is always ready to start recording with her phone whenever he shouts something like, \u201cHey, babe: I got a fish on hana pa\u2018a!\u201d \u2014 began documenting his outdoor experiences around O\u2018ahu.<\/p>\n Will WIlliams proudly shows o\u001f a papio he hooked during one of the episodes for his YouTube channel Free Will Fishing.<\/p><\/div>\n The result is Free Will Fishing<\/em>, an appeal-to-anglers-of-all-levels show that is now in its second season.<\/p>\n Part of the show’s charm is that Williams makes shoreline fishing so much fun. In one episode called \u201cPlethora of P\u0101pios,\u201d for example, Williams teaches his 6-year-old son Orion how to properly cast a fishing line. Upon doing so, Orion almost immediately pulls a h\u012bn\u0101lea from the waters; the beginner’s luck continues soon after as the youngster is able to get a nenue to bite.<\/p>\n \u201cTwo for two!\u201d exclaims Williams, congratulating his son for the unexpected haul as Orion’s infectious shrieks of joy are heard in the background. \u201cLook at this kid. Oh, my goodness!\u201d<\/p>\n In another episode, Williams snags what he calls \u201cthe catch of a lifetime\u201d \u2014 a 30-pound \u2018ulua \u2014 then releases it back into the ocean to honor local fishing customs.<\/p>\n The Williams family \u2014 (clockwise from top-middle) Sabrina, Samir, Will, Orion and Nayyir \u2014 moved to the islands in 2015.<\/p><\/div>\n \u201cThere’s a tradition here of doing that with your first \u2018ulua, and since it was my first, I had to let it go,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt swam off strong, so hopefully, it’ll go on to make more \u2018ulua.\u201d<\/p>\n Finally, in yet another episode, Williams perfectly captures the moment he hauls in a nearly 5-pound pualu to the moment he cleans and fries the surgeonfish in his kitchen. In between these scenes, however, he mistakenly refers to the fish as \u201cpalani\u201d several times, yet he does not edit those comments out. Instead, he decides to poke fun at himself near the end of the episode with a chyron in all caps that reads: HERE’S OUR FRIEND PUALU (NOT PALANI, LOL).<\/p>\n In making the verbal flub clear to his audience, Williams, in his own unpretentious way, reveals something important: that he’s just an easy-going, ordinary guy doing something he’s always loved while having the time of his life.<\/p>\n Remarkably, even Williams didn’t believe viewers would be nibbling at his show for very long.<\/p>\n \u201cI thought it would be drowned out by people who were a lot more experienced, and a lot more familiar with the local ways of fishing,\u201d confesses the Mililani resident, who claims to be a big fan of other local fishing channels such as Shaka Fishing<\/em>, The Hungry Fisherman<\/em> and Scuba Chris<\/em>, and within them found inspiration for his own channel. \u201cBut what I learned was that all of this (inexperience) is learnable.\u201d<\/p>\n The star of Free Will Fishing waits to cast his line into the waters at Makua Beach. PHOTOS COURTESY WILL WILLIAMS<\/p><\/div>\n More importantly, he’s discovered that as long as he keeps on serving up his fishing tales with that unmistakable positive vibe of his, piscatorians will keep taking the bait by tuning in.<\/p>\n \u201cThe strange thing now is people actually recognize me when I go to the supermarket or the beach,\u201d says Williams. \u201cThey’ll be like, \u2018Hey, I know you!’ So yes, I’m always shocked by the attention, but I’m grateful, too.\u201d<\/p>\n A native of Philadelphia, Williams’ earliest memory involves fishing with his dad at a nearby river. He was about 3 at the time.<\/p>\n \u201cThe first thing I pulled in was an old boot \u2014 just like in the cartoons,\u201d he recalls with a chuckle. \u201cBut the second time around, it was a catfish.\u201d<\/p>\n A different type of haul would come in 2015 when he, Sabrina and their three sons decided to pack their bags and head as far west of the country as possible. In choosing to relocate to Hawai\u2018i, the Williams left friends and family scratching their heads.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen you tell people from Philly that you’re going to move 5,000 miles away, the first thing that comes up in their minds is, \u2018Hey, did you hit the lottery?’ The second thing is, \u2018Are you running from somebody?’\u201d says Williams, who initially entertained the idea of moving to the 50th state four years earlier after attending a friend’s wedding on O\u2018ahu.<\/p>\n \u201cObviously, neither of those things were the case. It was simply that we felt the environment we were in didn’t necessarily match the outdoorsy lifestyle that we wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n With his background in social work, Williams immediately found a position at Hale Kipa, where he taught at-risk youth, among other things, how to interview for a job, develop their r\u00e9sum\u00e9 and save money \u201cso they could get their own place.\u201d In addition, he held a part-time gig at H\u0101lawa Correctional Facility teaching inmates how to read and write.<\/p>\n Nowadays, Williams works as training specialist for Honolulu Police Department. Part of his job involves converting in-person classes into online training sessions because of the coronavirus pandemic. But a more important part requires addressing \u201clatent biases\u201d among officers \u2014 a sensitive topic that has received more scrutiny as of late because of the George Floyd case and the Black Lives Matter movement.<\/p>\n \u201cHPD has taken a proactive approach to try to prevent some of those things that are obviously more egregious in enforcement that we’ve seen (on the mainland) and make sure those things don’t happen here,\u201d says Williams, who was hired by HPD last December.<\/p>\n \u201cWe know that all human beings have some sort of bias \u2014 whether it’s racial bias, bias toward gender, bias toward economic class \u2014 that does affect some scenarios,\u201d he continues. \u201cThat’s why there’s training, so that we can understand the science behind why there’s an inequality in some outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n For Williams, the preferred outcome is a state \u201cof joy and positivity.\u201d<\/p>\n He’s found much of that in fishing, and it’s why he’s so passionate about sharing the outdoor activity with others.<\/p>\n \u201cFor some people, fishing is stressful and they get frustrated very easily \u2014 but not me,\u201d he shares. \u201cFishing is my peace; it’s my zen.
