Life in Hollywood\u2019s bright lights has long been a family affair for stuntman-turned-actor Branscombe Richmond.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Branscombe Richmond has one of those recognizable faces. At first, he appears to be just any local braddah. Could he be a neighbor, distant relative or maybe the bouncer from the dive bar last Friday night? But then he smiles, showing off his perfect white teeth, and you can almost hear a \u201cding\u201d like in the cartoons. That\u2019s it \u2014 he\u2019s famous.<\/p>\n

Upon this realization, some people play it cool, but some can\u2019t help but cat-call the actor in the most endearing way.<\/p>\n

\u201cHo, you da guy from that one movie!\u201d they usually holler.<\/p>\n

But which movie?<\/p>\n

K\u016bpuna may remember him as Detective Max Quentero, a corrupt policeman who tries to take down Steven Seagal\u2019s character in Hard to Kill<\/em>. Adults know him as Bobby Sixkiller in Renegade<\/em>, a bounty hunter-themed show that had a successful five-season run in the 1990s. Gamers identify him as the voice of Gibraltar in Apex Legends<\/em>, a video game played by millions around the world, or Kimo in Netflix\u2019s popular family flick Finding \u2018Ohana<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A few may even recognize him as the tough \u201cdoodoo papah\u201d guy (if you know, you know) who punches Jason Segal in the face in Forgetting Sarah Marshall<\/em> or as Dwayne \u201cthe Rock\u201d Johnson\u2019s brother in Scorpion King<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Richmond is a dynamic actor, producer, stuntman and stunt coordinator, boasting well over 200 credits and his work has brought entertainment to at least three generations of viewers. It\u2019s a feat some entertainment professionals only dream of.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about timing, chance, good fortune, persistence and talent,\u201d says Richmond. \u201cWhen the timing comes, you gotta take a chance on yourself; God willing, you get a little good fortune; persistence will keep you together to get more good fortune; and talent is last. A lot of guys are very talented, but they never take a chance on themselves, which is a sad thing.<\/p>\n

Branscombe Richmond is living proof that the family that ~ lms together sticks together \u2014 case in point, the recent founding of the production company RichmondFamilyFilms. \u201cI always remind people that they don\u2019t need to have all the answers, they just need to believe in themselves. That\u2019s my mantra of being able to get through it all. Here I am today, blessings are abundant, and still relevant in the motion picture\/television business. It\u2019s not that I have a secret recipe, I just try to paddle my canoe stronger and faster than guys who look like me at this age.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to his Screen Actors Guild health\/pension plan, 2024 marks his 50th year in the industry. But believe it or not, his credentials go back even further.<\/p>\n

Richmond says that his father, Leo, was among the early Polynesians to succeed in Hollywood. (He now tips his hat to the Rock and Jason Momoa for further paving the way.) At age 5, Richmond, now 68, knew he wanted to step into his father\u2019s spotlight, so he became an extra in films like Mutiny on the Bounty<\/em> with Marlon Brando and Donovan\u2019s Reef<\/em> with John Wayne.<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s undeniably cool to share the screen with the Golden Age elites, Richmond doesn\u2019t attribute that as his \u201cbreak big.\u201d That came later when he got the chance to perform stunts for Gregory Sierra in Disney\u2019s The Castaway Cowboy<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got a shot because the stunt guy they had lined up got the wrong call, so it was my turn,\u201d says Richmond. \u201cI saw my check for $215 compared to my extra check for $37.50, and I went, \u2018Boy, if I could do this every day, life would be great.\u2019 Little did I know, it doesn\u2019t happen like that. Affirmative action came in, and since I was a person of color, I got a shot. They said, \u2018Hey Richmond, before we light you on fire and throw you down these stairs, can you say these five lines?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s how it started. I became an actor via being an action guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

He credits his towering height (6 foot 3) as a big selling point for casting directors. It undoubtedly secured him some of the \u201cbad guy\u201d roles he became known for.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will say most leading guys can\u2019t beat up on an actor shorter than them because it\u2019ll make them look like a bully,\u201d Richmond says. \u201cBecause I was a guy of some size, I was able to get a lot of action \u2018bad guy\u2019 roles because it always looked better if Chuck Norris beat up on a guy taller than him.\u201d<\/p>\n

He may portray a villain on screen, but Richmond is quite the opposite in real life. Mr. Aloha loves talking story with fans; taking care of his papayas, bananas and lo\u2018i patches at his Kula home; and spending quality time with his dog, Kukui.<\/p>\n

Perhaps his Hawaiian roots taught him the sentiment, \u201cIt\u2019s nice to be important, but it\u2019s important to be nice,\u201d which is something he seems to live by. When asked about his favorite people to work with, he mentions Ray Bolger (among a long list of others), not just because of his acting chops, but because of the way the man, who was cast as the Scarecrow in 1939\u2019s The Wizard of Oz<\/em>, treated people.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was watching the master of kindness,\u201d he says about sharing a dressing room with Bolger on the set of TV movie Three on a Date<\/em>. \u201cHe always had a second or two for everybody, and that\u2019s what I learned from him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis business is so small, the non-kind ones don\u2019t last,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n

In between filming, Richmond met former Miss Hawai\u2018i and Kamehameha School grad, Lei Ma\u2018a. The couple married, had four children and settled on Maui, where they reside today, in addition to Los Angeles and Kentucky.<\/p>\n

Like his father, Richmond involved his children in the family business \u2014 marking 75 years and counting of Richmonds in Holly-wood \u2014 and recently founded the production company Richmond-FamilyFilms.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always been a dream,\u201d he says. \u201cIf you look at my IMDB, you\u2019ll see I\u2019ve been blessed to produce quite a bit of content, but it wasn\u2019t until I met a gentleman by the name of Garrett Sutton \u2026 He became an angel to RichmondFamilyFilms and now I have a slate of films that will be produced for Sunn Stream.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year, fans may find Richmond in Kangaroo Kids<\/em> and Decade of the Dead<\/em>, both of which are directed by his son, Fairai, plus Scare the Freckles Right Off Your Face! <\/em>and At Her Feet<\/em> starring Kaua\u2018i\u2019s Sydney Agudong, who will play Nani in the live-action Lilo & Stitch<\/em>. \u201cI want to do good work and have some fun, smile, and make others smile as well,\u201d says Richmond.<\/p>\n

The national average retirement age is 61, so, it\u2019s only natural to wonder if that\u2019s coming up for the seasoned actor.<\/p>\n

When the question is posed, Richmond responds, \u201cRetirement? What the heck is that?<\/p>\n

\u201cI stole something from Clint Eastwood who I stunt-coordinated for on Hereafter<\/em>. He said something that I borrowed, that is, \u2018I\u2019m not letting the old man in.\u2019 So I\u2019m not retiring for anything, ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s safe to say we can anticipate seeing Richmond\u2019s familiar face in even more motion pictures. So, get ready to find yourself staring a bit longer, trying to place him if you catch him on the street.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
