T<\/span>his music gives me rhythm, helps me heal my soul.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The lyric from the song Love Slow<\/i> by brothers Nyjah Music and Zyah Rhythm, reflects just how important the art form is in both of their lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

Music and rhythm are a part of them \u2014 and are literally their middle names.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nyjah, 16, and Zyah, 15, come from a family rooted in music. Their uncle is Bruno Mars and their mom, Tahiti Kemper Hernandez, was a member of The Lylas \u2014 an R&B group that included their aunties \u2014 and today remains a \u201cDJ for fun.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The brothers\u2019 childhoods are filled with memories of family karaoke, playing \u02bbukulele and singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow<\/i> and You Are My Sunshine<\/i> with their grandma.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re just super blessed to have a strong, musical family and a talented bloodline and a supportive family around us,\u201d Zyah says. \u201cIt was fun, it was loud (and) it molded us to who we are now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Nyjah adds, \u201cWe always got to sing with the family when we all got together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The North Shore duo has accumulated a steady stream of industry cred over the past few years, from singing an a capella version of Janet Jackson\u2019s Together Again<\/i> in a Gap holiday ad to being featured on the soundtrack of Disney\u2019s live-action Lilo & Stitch<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

While the siblings have had an online presence on Instagram since 2013, they garnered a spike in attention (and 48,000 likes) in March 2024 when they posted their cover of Elvis Presley\u2019s Can\u2019t Help Falling In Love<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAfter that, it kind of clicked that we\u2019re a team,\u201d Zyah says, adding that it was the first time they had sung harmonies together.<\/span><\/p>\n

The brothers dropped their first single on Nov. 8, 2024. The Island Girl Is Mine<\/i> is their take on Michael Jackson\u2019s The Girl is Mine<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

They\u2019ve also released an additional six singles and four music videos \u2014 the most recent being Summer Love<\/i>, which came out in October.<\/span><\/p>\n

Their sound leans toward island reggae, but they also are open to including R&B and pop into their music.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur goal is just to sing and be brothers,\u201d Nyjah says. \u201cAnd you know, whatever comes to us, comes to us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

So far, they\u2019ve enjoyed their share of opportunities to showcase their talent. The brothers won a People\u2019s Choice award at last year\u2019s Mana Up Showcase, and later got to perform with the Hawai\u02bbi Symphony Orchestra at Hawai\u02bbi Theatre.<\/p>\n

This year, they were recognized by the Honolulu City Council.<\/p>\n

The duo has also performed at the first annual Ke Nui Fest on the North Shore, Ko Olina Children\u2019s Festival, The \u02bbEwa Carnival at Wai Kai and Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s Finest 16th anniversary festival at Neal S. Blaisdell Center. They even shared the stage with reggae rock-pop band Common Kings.<\/p>\n

One of the most memorable performances for Nyjah was when a random street performer filled in for one of the brothers\u2019 drummers. Nyjah says he was just vibing with the music, when out of nowhere, he heard conga drums playing. The spontaneity made the performance mo<\/span>re fun for all.<\/p>\n

For Zyah, the performance that stands out was the one where the crowd went crazy for their cover of a song by \u201cone of the reggae kings,\u201d the late Fiji, also known as George Veikoso.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s where I find my happiness,\u201d Zyah says about performing live. \u201cUsually the first \u2026 few songs on stage, I\u2019m pretty nervous.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut then you gotta feel the crowd,\u201d Nyjah adds, explaining the importance of being able to read the audience and tailor the performance accordingly.<\/p>\n

Besides singing and playing the \u02bbukulele, the brothers also play piano \u2014 as seen in their videos on Instagram. Nyjah is learning to play guitar, too.<\/p>\n

They also have a lot of involvement in the creative process. Nyjah works with the writers in the studio and helps produce songs.<\/p>\n

When asked about where they get inspiration, they say it\u2019s mostly life \u2014 but also girls. That\u2019s clear from lyrics such as, \u201cCan we try to hold on to each other? But the seasons change and the summer fades, I hope this love will stay\u201d from Summer Love<\/i>, or \u201cWhen you realize you deserve more, when you\u2019re ready my heart is yours\u201d from My Heart is Yours<\/i> \u2014 which is Zyah\u2019s preferred song to perform live.<\/p>\n

But his favorite thing about music is the way it moves people.<\/p>\n

His brother, on the other hand, says, \u201cI love getting into the feeling of just dancing while singing, because it makes you feel good and it makes the crowd feel good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since they\u2019re still young, Nyjah and Zyah are just looking to \u201cgo with the flow\u201d and continuing to have fun making music.<\/p>\n

Both hint at new music dropping early next year.<\/p>\n

As Zyah says with a laugh, \u201cMore music, more shows, more \u2018Music and Rhythm!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Their message to other youth hoping to break into the music scene is simple: \u201cDon\u2019t let other people tell you what to do. Do what you love. And do what your heart desires.\u201d<\/p>\n

Being homeschooled has opened up more opportunities for the brothers to pursue music, but beyond the stage, they both like to be outdoors. Zyah enjoys fishing, surfing and diving. Nyjah likes to play golf and go skating.<\/p>\n

The brothers express appreciation for their family and all those who have supported them in their journey so far.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re so blessed to have such talented people in our family,\u201d Zyah says, \u201cBut our talent is our own and the world will see it.\u201d<\/p>\n
