With the rest of the musicians, I think they enjoy the fun musical arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a nice blend of multicultural input,\u201d continues the band\u2019s trumpeter and arranger. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t have it any other way. To me, I\u2019m blessed with the best. Ortiz explains that he used to play in another group while stationed here as a U.S. Marine. When his military career ended, his desire was to continue living in the Aloha State, but the lack of what he calls \u201cauthentic Caribbean music\u201d in Hawai\u2018i bothered him. He took it upon himself to fill that music void by creating Eddie Ortiz and Son Caribe in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>Son Caribe means \u201crhythm of the Caribbean\u201d in Spanish, according to Ortiz, and is a nod to the type of music (contemporary, top 40 and jazz) that the band creates. Its goal is to make people feel good and to engage with all audiences. Interestingly enough, while Romero can sing in Spanish, she\u2019s actually not fluent in the language and learns the lyrics phonetically.<\/p>\n<p>Prospective members don\u2019t necessarily need to be experienced in Latin music to be a part of the band, he adds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as they\u2019re willing to learn and listen so that I can teach them \u2014 I\u2019m good,\u201d explains Ortiz, adding that he\u2019s employed around 500 musicians in the band since its formation. \u201cIt\u2019s been fun because I enjoy teaching. It\u2019s fun to bring somebody along and watch them develop skills in a different genre of music that they didn\u2019t have before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the band first stepped out on the scene, the members had a hard time getting booked at venues. Members include (from left) Daniel Sananikone, Joseph Nakamoto, Eddie Ortiz, Cynthia Romero, Jeremy Killeen, Daniel Weber, Clayton \u201cCJ\u201d Silva, Guy Lum and Reid Ishikawa.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThat was one of the biggest obstacles \u2014 just getting our foot in the door,\u201d Ortiz recalls. \u201cIt was very difficult in the beginning until we proved ourselves that we could not only draw an audience, but maintain an audience, and thankfully, continue to grow audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the challenges the band has faced, Ortiz believes that all the work that the group has put into the ensemble has paid off. From initially struggling to book appearances to performing internationally, Eddie Ortiz and Son Caribe has come a long way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were able to establish ourselves in Asia from Hawai\u2018i, and now we\u2019re starting to get attention from Latin America, which is something that I\u2019ve always wanted to be able to do,\u201d Ortiz beams.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it be with tourists who remember the band from a previous trip to Hawai\u2018i, or with college students looking to dance the night away, the band has maintained a strong following. In fact, fans eagerly await the band\u2019s return to performing live at Ilikai Hotel &#038; Luxury Suites\u2019 courtyard \u2014 that is, once the finishing touches are put on the album.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz says that \u201cevery guest is important\u201d and that the band will always strive to put its best foot forward at each performance because the members know they wouldn\u2019t be where they are today if it weren\u2019t for the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so grateful to the people in Hawai\u2018i for the way they received us,\u201d Ortiz says. \u201cIt\u2019s something that I would\u2019ve never imagined before I started the band.
